Pros and cons of Vaccination in poultry
(Moe South, Australia)
Hi guys, i just have a question for you about getting baby chicks and ducks immunised? is it enough for them to just have starter crumble and grower pellets? Or should they have an injection or what - how does it work, as some people say they have had their chicks vaccinated.
MEG: CHICK FEEDS HAVE MEDICATION TO PROTECT AGAINST THE PROTOZOA COCCIDIOSIS, BUT DO NOT VACCINATE OR PROTECT AGAINST VIRUSES OR BACTERIA OR OFFER ANY LASTING PROTECTION OF ANY KIND. UNLIKE DUCKS, CHICKENS ARE SUBJECT TO LOTS OF DISEASES. THE ARGUMENT IS DIVIDED ON WHETHER TO VACCINATE OR NOT. ITS A DECISION YOU HAVE TO MAKE BEFORE YOU BREED AS MAREKS DISEASE IS A BIG ONE IN AUSTRALIA AND MUST BE VACCINATED FOR AT HATCHING. YOU CAN EASILY LOSE 70% OF AN UNVACCINATED CHICKEN FLOCK EACH YEAR TO THIS AND OTHER DISEASES. HOWEVER, OVER SEVERAL YEARS YOU GRADUALLY BUILD UP RESISTANCE. SO BEST I THINK TO SOURCE YOUR CHICKENS FROM LOCALLY BRED STOCK AND LET NATURE DECIDE.
