RTreatment for Stickfast fleas
by: Tony

When we find Stickfast fleas on our chooks, we catch them individually and use spray-on cooking oil to coat their heads with oil. This suffocates the fleas and they fall off. We check after a week to see if any re-treatment is needed.
We also spray our chicken houses with a pyrethrin solution as a prophylactic measure.

Stickfast fleas can cause chick deaths within 2 - 5 days of hatching, so we are vigilant monitoring sitting hens.

Fleas and mites

I live in south Africa and have started using diatomaceous earth (DE) for internal parasite control with my horses, dogs and cats. The use of this has also cut my fly population down drastically as the diatoms have tiny sharp edges that cut the soft bodies of the fly larva, leaving them susceptible to bacterial infections and drastically affecting their life cycle. (same principle for internal parasites)

Now that I am establishing my free range egg unit, I will add this to their feed as well. There is a separate grade of DE for rolling which is used for all animals to control external parasites in the same manner as the internal grade does.

In addition, DE is high in trace minerals like calcium, magnesium etc which are essential to good egg-shell production and general health.

(Humans can take it too.. there are a number of amazing health benefits for us)

When small gnats begin attacking my flock, I hung fly strips in the house.

The sticky strips attracted and captured 1,000s of them. If left uncontrolled, they will smother your chickens to death.

It can be very serious so take action at the first sign of the gnats.
