TEMPERATE: STRAWBALE BUILDING QUESTION

You have a wonderful, informative site! Thank you because I have been doing a lot of research on sustainable building.

I live in Maine, which is a four season state and some cold winters.

I am interested in straw bale construction and cob. My question is:

Can I build a semi-round home using straw, which is great insulation, especially for my cold state? I was interested in covering with cob, but will be looking into the lime.

Thanks for your help and what a great site!

Peace,
Julie

MEG: THERE ARE HEAPS OF EXAMPLES OF CIRCULAR STRAWBALE BUILDINGS ON THE NET. REALLY, YOU CAN BUILD IN ANY SHAPE YOU LIKE! EITHER LOAD BEARING OR NOT - YOUR CHOICE. MAIN LIMITATION IS HEIGHT AND FOR LOAD BEARING, THE SIZE AND NUMBER OF WINDOWS AND DOORS IS LIMITED.
