Easy! He is a crossed light sussex, good breeder but might be better in the pot.

cross breds are good
by: Jon White

My initial thougths were a Light Sussex Cross, but after reading the other comments, I'm not so sure. Anyway, the point is that he looks like a good all-round bird and should be good to breed from. My experience of cross-breeds is good. They have a little more survival instinct than pure-breds, making them better foragers and a little more street-smart (or should I say fox-smart). They always have great eggs, but most are a little more flighty and go broody more readily. I find that by observing these natural instincts (that are often seen in cross-breds) are a good way to learn about chicken behaviour. Anyway, that's just my experience.

On studying the picture of your rooster it strongly suggests that it is a predominantly Light Sussex cross - with at this stage an unknown rose comb breed. If the other part of the the breed was Silver and the cockerel was a red rose comb then this would show up in the progeny as males as silver and hens as reds. It is difficult to be precise when the linage is unknown.

I have 3 roosters that look exactly like your guy. Their mom is a Gold Laced Wyandotte and their dad is a huge Light Brahma. I'll bet other crosses could produce a similar rooster though.

Do Wyandottes come in this colour?
by: Anonymous

That "rose comb" reminds me of the Wyandotte, the color is classic Light Sussex. Maybe he is a cross? Or does someone have a better idea?
