Will chickens eat peppers off a pepper tree???

I wanted to put my chook run around my pepper tree (pepper not capsicum) - Will they take a liking to the berry when in season??? And is it safe?

MEG: I had a chook run under a pepper tree and the chickens were fine... don't know if they ate them or not though.
